This flamboyant portrait of the architect Hugh May was painted by Samuel Cooper. In 1673, May was promoted to Comptroller of the Works at Windsor and was charged with completing Charles II’s remodelling of the Castle, replacing the fourteenth-century buildings of Edward III in the Upper Ward with new suites of magnificent State Apartments.
