Paintings and manuscripts from south India
South India is best known for its brightly-coloured wall paintings and richly decorated painted sculptures. In the Hindu courts, palm leaf manuscripts, written in Sanskrit, Tamil, Kannada and Telugu, were produced until the twentieth century. Manuscripts from the Muslim courts of south India, were written largely on paper in Persian, Dakkani and Arabic. Like those of the Mughal court, these traditionally reveal a strong Iranian influence. From the seventeenth century, the diverse cultural environment of south India resulted in more hybrid styles of manuscripts and paintings.
