Varaha, the third avatar of Vishnu who takes the form of a boar, stands on top of the slain demon Hiranyaksha, whose body floats on the cosmic ocean. Varaha holds on his tusks the earth, depicted as a group of temples on a hill, which he has rescued from the bottom of the cosmic ocean. Hiranyaksha holds a mace topped with a tigers' head.
