REMBRANDT VAN RIJN (LEIDEN 1606-AMSTERDAM 1669)

Agatha Bas (1611-1658)

Signed and dated 1641

RCIN 405352

The deep black dye of the gown worn by Agatha Bas is intensified by the bright white of her lace-trimmed linen accessories, which include pleated cuffs and a kerchief folded and pinned around her neck. Rembrandt masterfully depicts the lace using economical touches of black paint to suggest the fashionably dense pattern. The Netherlands was famous for the production of high quality linens and for its bleaching industry, which is frequently depicted in the background of Dutch landscape paintings
