Charles II Presented with a Pineapple
c.1675-80RCIN 406896
In October 1666 Charles II announced that he intended to set a new mode of male clothing: a knee-length vest worn with a coat which would replace the doublet and cloak. The king wears a brown wool coat in this rare image of him wearing fashionable attire – he is more often depicted in Garter robes or armour. The coat and vest were designed to outlast the whims of fashion and indeed the style was the precursor to the modern male three-piece suit.
