AFTER ROBERT BONNART (1652-1729)
Marie Anne Stuard Princesse d'Orange
c.1694-1711RCIN 603312
Patches never appear in painted portraits of the seventeenth century. While all Queen Mary’s painted portraits show her skin undecorated, here she is depicted wearing three modest circular patches. Patches were found in a variety of shapes including crescents, flowers and animals, and as many as seven might be worn at once.
