NICHOLAS HILLIARD (1547-1619)

Pendant with a miniature of Elizabeth I

Miniature: c. 1585; Miniature case: c. 1600

RCIN 17197

Elizabeth I was known to make gifts of jewels, often bearing her likeness. The small size of this pendant suggests it was possibly worn as an earring. Earrings became increasingly popular towards the end of the sixteenth century when they were often worn in one ear only.
