Portrait of a Woman

c.1620

RCIN 406064

This unidentified woman wears a waistcoat with scrolling foliate embroidery similar to that on the waistcoat displayed nearby. The lace trimming the neckline and sleeves has probably been dyed with saffron to produce the distinctive yellow colour fashionable during the early years of the seventeenth century. The sitter’s loose hair suggests this is a particularly intimate portrait.
