Stumpwork casket

c1660-1690

RCIN 39240

Embroidered caskets of this type were produced in England in considerable numbers in the period 1660 – 90 by young girls, almost invariably amateurs, practising their needlework skills. This casket is of exceptional quality, and includes a rare pastoral tableau on the lid of a shepherdess sitting beneath trees with her flock and dog. The sides portray Old Testament subjects.
