dated 26 Aug 1860RCIN 980946
Prince Albert, who greatly esteemed Tennyson’s poetry, was given this watercolour (along with two others illustrating scenes from Tennyson’s Enid) by his daughter Princess Alice as a birthday gift. Enid was first published in 1859 as one of the first set of the Idylls of the Kings, the cycle of twelve narrative poems retelling the legend of King Arthur. This watercolour depicts Enid’s injured husband Geraint being carried to safety, with the weeping Enid accompanying him.
Given to Albert, the Prince Consort on the occasion of his birthday, 26 August 1860
