Carol Ann Duffy's poem was commissioned by the BBC to mark the deaths of Henry Allingham and Harry Patch, two of the last surviving men who served in the First World War. The title refers to the bugle call played to remember those killed in war. The poem begins with two lines from Dulce et Decorum Est by the First World War poet Wilfred Owen, before going on to imagine soldiers who died in the war coming back to life.
