This photograph is the third part of an extraordinary eleven-section panorama of the Plateau of Sevastopol (reproduced in full later in the exhibition). The panorama shows the full extent of the British presence. Viewing from left to right, we are taken from the military camps through the bleak Crimean landscape to be presented finally with the British cemetery at Cathcart’s Hill. It is a poignant sequence of images that begins with military heroism but ends with sadness.
