The niello technique was first practised in Russia in the thirteenth century by Kievan Rus craftsmen. By the early nineteenth century Russia was virtually the only part of Europe regularly using the technique in fashionable styles. The technique involves the addition of a black powder or paste of sulphur, copper, silver or lead which is fired until it melts into the engraved lines of metal on an object.
