Fan depicting 'Aurora and Apollo'

c. 1780

RCIN 25075

Aurora was the rosy-fingered goddess of dawn. With garlands of flowers in her hand, she leads the four-horse chariot (quadriga) of the sun-god Apollo across the sky to bring in the new day. Apollo’s chariot is surrounded by the Horae, the female personifications of the hours and attendants to Aurora. The fan leaf, signed by Giuseppe Trono (1739–1810), is based on Guido Reni’s painting of 1615.

Belonged to Queen Charlotte; presented to Queen Victoria by 1841
