Royal Jubilees
Milestone years have been celebrated in long reigns since George III
King George V and Queen Mary
Silver Jubilee, 1935
In 1935, King George V and Queen Mary were the first British monarchs to celebrate a Silver Jubilee. Like many of the previous Jubilees, the central event was a carriage procession through London to St Paul’s Cathedral where a Service of Thanksgiving was held. The Royal Family, with visiting members of royal families from Europe, later appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.
The day was once again a bank holiday, marked throughout the country with parties, sporting events and pageants. The king gave a radio broadcast to the nation in the evening.
