Royal Collection Trust

We’re a charity caring for the Royal Collection and looking after visitors to the royal palaces. The income from your ticket contributes to the care and conservation of the Royal Collection.

Sustainability

As one of the five departments of the Royal Household, Royal Collection Trust is aligned with His Majesty’s commitment to take urgent action for a zero-carbon and nature-positive future.

A Sustainability Action plan has been developed to consider all aspects of the work we undertake, with examples of progress made this year including:

Exhibitions

  • The development of bespoke carbon modelling tools to understand and reduce the carbon emissions generated by exhibition activity in The King’s Galleries.
  • The recycling and reuse of materials for exhibition builds with nearly three‑quarters of materials re‑used for exhibitions at The King’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace.
  • The assessment and upgrade to energy efficient lighting where the Royal Collection is on display, with the upgrade to LED lighting in The King’s Gallery in London anticipated to deliver a 69% energy saving for the next exhibition.

Learning events

  • Nature focussed programming, including a bird survey event in the gardens of Buckingham Palace offering care-experienced young people and their families an opportunity to enjoy time in nature.

Catering

  • The complete renovation of the kitchen at the Café at the Palace of Holyroodhouse to an all-electric system to eliminate carbon emissions.

Digital

  • The completion of a sustainability audit of the Royal Collection Trust website with areas of improvement identified and upgrades being undertaken.
