George III was critical of the East India Company. In 1769 he appointed Sir John Lindsay as ‘His Majesty’s Plenipotentiary to India’. Lindsay’s mission was to cultivate relationships with India’s rulers and to endeavour to maintain peace. The East India Company was oppose to Lindsay’s interference and had him recalled after just two years.
