Locket containing hair of Charles I
c. 1620, with insert 1813RCIN 43778
During the sixteenth and early seventeenth century a double-sided jewel of this type, which opened to reveal a cameo, miniature or other precious contents, was known as a tablet and could be worn around the neck or pinned to clothing, often the sleeve. This locket contains a lock of hair from Charles I, cut during the discovery of the king’s coffin at St George’s chapel in 1813.
