William I, Prince of Orange (r. 1544 – 84) was a leading figure in the Dutch revolts against Spanish Habsburg rule, and formally founded the House of Nassau-Orange. This portrait was engraved almost 40 years after his death, by which time he was celebrated in the Netherlands as 'Vader des vaderlands’, the Father of the Fatherland.
