Consort
To have been spared in the war and seen victory, to have been given the chance to rest and to re-adjust myself, to have fallen in love completely and unreservedly, makes all one’s personal and even the world’s troubles seem small and petty
Prince Philip served as an officer in the Royal Navy between 1939 and 1952. Following the renouncement of his Greek titles, as Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten he married Princess Elizabeth, now Her Majesty The Queen, at Westminster Abbey on 20 November 1947. On the eve of the wedding, his father-in-law, King George VI, created him Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich.
The Queen and Prince Philip were married for over 73 years and have four children: Prince Charles (The Prince of Wales), Princess Anne (The Princess Royal), Prince Andrew (The Duke of York) and Prince Edward (The Earl of Wessex). At the time of his death, Prince Philip had eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
In 2009 Prince Philip became Britain’s longest-serving consort, the term given to the spouse of the sovereign.
