Environmental conservation, the support of sport and the encouragement of younger generations were all important features in Prince Philip’s duties. He was involved from the start of the foundation of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Prince Philip served as President of the UK branch of WWF until 1982 and as President of WWF International until 1996.

Prince Philip was elected President of the FEI in 1964, being re-elected five further times. The FEI sets international rules for equestrian sport, including in the Olympic Games. 

His widest-reaching legacy for young people will be the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, often informally abbreviated to ‘DofE’, instituted by Prince Philip in 1956 at the suggestion of his former headmaster at Gordonstoun, Kurt Hahn. The Award, and the International Award, are now the world’s leading youth achievement awards for young people aged 14–24.
