The Queen's Coronation

Prince Philip was Chair of the Coronation Commission and particularly encouraged the live television broadcast of parts of the Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953. As The Queen’s consort, he was the first person to pay homage to the newly crowned Queen, kneeling before her to pledge his allegiance.

I, Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, do become your liege man of life and limb, and of earthly worship; and faith and truth I will bear unto you, to live and die, against all manner of folks. So help me God.

Prince Philip, 1953
