Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh's Robe for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II

1953

Velvet, ermine, silk | RCIN 250670

Prince Philip wore this ermine-trimmed robe and coronet to The Queen’s Coronation. Beneath the robes he wore the uniform of an Admiral of the Fleet, a rank which he was awarded by The Queen in early 1953. The promotion was heralded as ‘popular’ amongst the Royal Navy following the Prince’s naval service between 1939 and 1951.

In 2011 to mark his 90th birthday, The Queen awarded her husband the rank of Lord High Admiral, the ceremonial head of the Royal Navy.
