Queen Elizabeth II's first Christmas Broadcast was made in December 1952. The queen spoke during a live radio transmission and sat at the same desk and chair that her grandfather, King George V, used when he made the very first Christmas broadcast in 1932 from Sandringham. She talked about the importance of family, both at home and in terms of the family of Commonwealth nations in what she described as “that immense union of nations.” The queen paid special tribute to serving British and Commonwealth troops who were separated from their families during the Christmas period, saying “Wherever you are, either at home or away, in snow or in sunshine, I give you my affectionate greetings, with every good wish for Christmas and the New Year.”
