A Royal Christmas

How the Royal Family have celebrated Christmas over the centuries

1957 Christmas Broadcast

HM Queen Elizabeth II (b. 1926) makes her first Christmas broadcast©

In 1957, Queen Elizabeth II made her first live televised Christmas broadcast from Sandringham House. It was an historic event, not least because this was the first time that the public could see and hear the queen thanks to what she described as the ‘new medium’ of television. Additionally, it took place on the 25th anniversary of the first Christmas broadcast made by her grandfather, King George V. Despite the technological advances and change that television introduced, The queen stressed the importance of maintaining the fundamental principles of religion, morality and honesty. Note the sprigs of holly disguising the microphone on the table.
