Catherine the Great (1729-1796)

Peter the Great’s son and heir died, and the throne passed to his wife Catherine. For Catherine, a minor German princess, seen by some as a usurper of the throne, it was critical to be seen as a dominant powerful ruler. Catherine remained ever conscious of the message she was disseminating through portraiture. She was heavily involved in the construction of her iconography.
