The idea of war as a glorious endeavour for the rich wasn’t in keeping with changing thought. This tide of change is evident in the painting, Roll Call, which shows the view of the common soldier in the Crimean War. It was painted by the English painter, Lady Butler, in 1874, 18 years after the war finished. This makes it a secondary source for the Crimea but a primary source for opinions leading up to the Russian Revolution. It is an image of the aftermath of the Battle of Inkerman which happened in 1854 with the roll call of the British Grenadier guards.
